You can kick off Netflix moochers to their own account

Source: Netflix

Broke up with an ex and don't want to share Netflix accounts anymore? While you can probably just kick them out and change the password, Netflix is introducing a new Profile Transfer feature that lets them keep their recommendations, watch history, saved titles, and more. This feature is rolling out to all users and will be enabled automatically, except for in South Korea and the US where you'll need to activate it from your settings yourself.

You'll get an email when the feature is available to your account. You can then access it through the drop-down menu on the right side of the profile icons. You can't transfer a profile to an existing account, though. This account needs to be attached to a new one. While Netflix is framing this as a solution for exes or when you move away from home, it does give the company the means to charge password sharers an extra fee, which we just wrote an update about.

Netflix to charge for password sharing in 'early 2023'

Source: Netflix

Netflix has long been lamenting its users sharing accounts with people outside their households. The company's solution was to test out "monetize account sharing." In a letter with shareholders, it says it's going to charge for password sharing in early 2023. The test has been running in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru, with Netflix allowing users to add two members for an additional fee of $2.99, 2,380 Chilean pesos, and 7.9 Peruvian sol, respectively, each per month. It hasn't said how much it plans to charge for other countries, but we're sure to hear more when the change approaches. You can now also transfer profiles of users to a new account if you don't want to pay extra.

Apple iPadOS 16 gets Oct. 24 release date

Source: Apple

Apple has delayed the release of iPadOS 16 without a definite release date until this announcement. The company will start rolling out the operating system on Monday, October 24. The new iPad and iPad Pro will ship with this latest software. It will come as an update for the base iPads (5th-gen and later), iPad mini (5th-gen and later), iPad Air (3rd-gen and later), and iPad Pro tablets.

The delay was attributed to the buggy Stage Manager implementation, a feature expected to introduce laptop-level multitasking to the iPad. It was initially supposed to be for the M1 iPads, but it is coming to the third- and fourth-generation iPad Pros. One feature that won't be available at launch is the external display support. Apple plans to roll this out through an update later this year. iPadOS 16 will get features like edit or unsend texts in iMessage and a Weather app (finally).

Apple refreshes iPad Pro with the new M2 chip

Source: Apple

Apple is also introducing a refresh for its professional line of tablets. The iPad Pro gets the M2 processor the company introduced earlier this year in the MacBook Air. It's expected to be 15% faster than the M1 processor used in last year's iPad Pro. Apple's also bringing a new "hover" feature that detects when the Apple Pencil is slightly above the screen. If you've used a stylus-compatible Samsung, you'll be familiar with this feature. When you hover over an item, you can "see a preview of their mark before they make it."

According to the company, this should also make it easier to sketch and illustrate with improved precision. Like with Scribble, the text fields will automatically expand when your Apple Pencil is near. It should convert handwriting to text faster, too. Apple says third-party apps could take advantage of the feature.
