If you want access to Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos on your gaming console of choice, then you better have a Microsoft Xbox. The company has exclusive rights to both technologies for two years. Since November's launch, the Xbox Series X/S systems have supported Dolby Atmos 3D audio, while the Xbox One has had it since 2017. If you want access to Dolby Atmos on Xbox consoles or PCs, you'll need to purchase a USD 15 license. But if you have the new Xbox Wireless Headset, you have access to Atmos at no extra cost until the end of September.

Apple TV on Xbox Series X/S get Dolby Vision

Microsoft & Spotify

The Apple TV on the Xbox Series X/S is getting improved visuals with the added support for Dolby Vision. Of course, you'll need a Dolby Vision-compatible display to get this feature to work, and you need to be an Apple TV+ subscriber. There will be a Dolby Vision logo on a show or movie's description page if the title and setup support it. Shows like Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest are available in Dolby Vision. To activate the feature on your Xbox, head to Settings > General > TV display options > Video Modes.

On other entertainment app news on the Xbox, Spotify video podcasts are available on the console. Shows like The Misfits have video podcasts on the platform. You can play the videos in the background or keep it running while you play games. You can also control playback via the Spotify app on your phone or tablet.

Microsoft starts testing Dolby Vision HDR gaming on Xbox Series X and S

A few Microsoft Xbox Series X and S users have noticed that the company has started testing Dolby Vision HDR gaming through the latest Xbox Insider Alpha ring release (2104). It's only available for a few games right now, including Borderlands 3, Halo: Master Chief Collection, Wreckfest, and Gears 5. The testers claim Dolby's picture quality is more "refined" than the usual HDR10, which is likely because of the dynamic data that adjust HDR visuals frame-by-frame.

Microsoft plans to release it to the general public "soon," but it hasn't committed beyond saying it will come out sometime this year. For Dolby Vision to work, you'll need a compatible TV.
