Apple reportedly delaying iOS visual enhancements to focus on performance and stability

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

A report today says that Apple is foregoing a visual update to iOS to focus on performance and stability enhancements on stability and security. Apple's iOS hasn't had a major visual overhaul since 2013 with iOS 7.

A report from Axios states that Apple's engineers will focus on improving performance, battery life as well as security will receive attention over visual redesign and a new look. This includes delaying some interface features, new photo-taking features, photo editing and sharing features. The iPhones 8 and X are already superior cameras, delaying new features this year won't make an impact.

I think this is a great move. iOS 11 has been generally a good update when used with new devices but seems to show its cracks when running on older iPhones or iPads. This is a case where the plumbing and electrical systems require repair before Apple can consider adding a new facade and splash of fresh paint.

A Time Travel feature allows users to see future events and past headlines using the digital crown. watchOS 2 also includes new communication features such as the ability to respond quickly to Mail with dictation, Smart Replies or emoji, and Digital Touch enables more creativity with multiple sketch colors. Weighing in at 515 MB, the update takes over an hour to download on the iPhone 6 (via WiFi). Stay tuned for our first impressions once we get the new OS installed on our Apple Watch.

To update open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone> go to My Watch> General> click Software Update. It should take an hour to download (seriously, an hour) before you can proceed to installation.

iOS 9 coming to iPhones and iPads tomorrow

iOS 9 is coming for free to iPhones and iPads tomorrow. Focusing on stability, user experience as well as bringing increased security features and improved multitasking and split-screen functionality for the iPad Air 2 (and upcoming iPad Pro). Updaters will welcome a number of new things about iOS 9. For one thing, it is a smaller download and should take up less time (and valuable storage space).

iOS 9 requires 1.3GB of free storage (instead of the 4.58GB of the previous version). iOS 9 is also supposed increase battery life on most devices (Apple promised 1 hour during WWDC). Having tested the public beta on an iPhone 5, iOS 9 does seem smoother and a tad bit faster. The new OS is expected to roll out tomorrow through the Software Update setting on their iOS devices.
