Malicious Apps and Social Media scams target 2016 Rio Olympic fans and brands

Hot topics are often exploited by hackers or scammers. The 2016 Rio Olympic games are likely to be the most digitally-enabled Olympics in history, but that presents as many opportunities for attackers as it does for the viewing public. New Proofpoint research suggests that digital risks could affect virtual attendees and fans worldwide. 

In total, we analyzed more than 1,300 Olympics-related social media accounts and thousands of mobile apps across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, YouTube, and various app stores. Our findings detail a variety of fraudulent activities as threat actors seek to capitalize on worldwide interest.

Have your kids explore the Himalayas with Google-made Yeti

We want to make learning as fun for kids as possible so kudos to Google for this new app it made. Called Verne: The Himalayas, the app (or experiment, as Google describes it) uses the Google Maps’ 3D imagery of the Himalayas and a 500-foot Yeti named Verne to explore the area. Verne can do things like skate on icy lakes, ride a jetpack, climb to the top of Mt. Everest, and play Himalayan instruments, among others. Aside from that, there’s a disembodied voice within the app that points out random facts about the Himalayas so the kids can learn new things. (You may or may not tell them this bit.) We’re hoping Google makes more of these apps to help kids learn about other parts of the world.

Three classic 16-bit Disney games can now be played on your PC

If you’ve played Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Jungle Book in your early years, then you’re in for a treat. These games have been “meticulously updated” to work with modern operating systems and are now available for download on GOG.com. The games aren’t remastered versions but are said to have preserved the original graphics, sound, and gameplay of the games originally released between 1993 and 1994. The modern OSes they said in the press release include Mac, Linux, and Windows systems. Each game costs US$9.99 but are currently on sale for US$8.99 each. If you want to get all three games, they’re on sale for US$19.98 but after the 8^th, it’ll cost you US$29.97 to get all three.

Rolls-Royce Wraith gets a bespoke luxury yacht feel

It’s almost automatic to associate Rolls-Royce with the word bespoke. So, what new highly customized vehicle is coming out? A new nautical-inspired version of the Wraith made by a former Disney Imagineer. Eddie Sotto, the founder and chief designer of Sotto Studios/LA. Sotto, has conceptualized a new look for the Wraith that would cost around US$1 million. Sotto previously designed the US$83-million Skyacht One designer jet, which is a customized Embraer Lineage 1000E. That was inspired by the fictional antihero Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilus—so, we know he likes the theme.
