iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 leave behind older iPhones and iPad

Apple has discontinued support for iPhones X, 8, and 8 Plus in iOS 17, ending the hopes of many users who wanted to keep their 2017 models updated for another year. While iOS 16 dropped all devices older than the iPhone 7 and the first-gen iPhone SE, this is the latest crop of older iPhone devices to get the boot. Similarly, iPadOS 17 will no longer support the first-gen iPad Pro and fifth-gen iPad from its support list.

Staples Canada now offers unlocked iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

If you’re interested in getting an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus but don’t want to be tied to a carrier, then you might want to head to Staples Canada. You can buy unlocked versions of the two Apple smartphones on either a 24-month Equal Payment Plan or outright. It must be noted though that Staples says it’ll be available at select stores so make sure to check before you head out. But they are also offering it on their website.

With the excitement surrounding the iPhone X, it seems to have overshadowed the new iPhone 8 devices. Reuters even quotes Rogers Communication’s chief executive who says demand for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have been “anemic.” This response from the public reportedly has Apple telling its suppliers in Taiwan to reduce production by nearly 50 percent in the following two months.

Apple’s shares fell nearly 3 percent on Thursday prompting analysts and investors to wonder about this staggered release of the company’s new devices. The iPhone X is expected to drop on November 3^rd. However, there are analysts that think the weak iPhone 8 sales won’t hurt Apple’s overall phone production as well as its revenue and margins as consumers might still consider buying older models. Demand might also surge once the new iPhone comes out—but again, that might not be for the iPhone 8.
