Apple and Microsoft hike device prices as AI infrastructure monopolizes chip supply

Apple and Microsoft have raised prices across their hardware lineups, citing an unprecedented global shortage of memory and storage chips driven by the artificial intelligence boom. On Thursday, Apple increased the price of its entry-level MacBook Neo by $150, bringing the starting price to $949 in Canada, while also raising prices for iPads, HomePods, and Apple TV devices.

In a statement to CBC, Apple warned that the consumer electronics industry is facing an "unprecedented challenge," noting the company has never seen component costs rise this quickly. The price surge stems from major chipmakers like Samsung and Micron shifting production capacity away from consumer electronics to prioritize high-margin AI orders for companies like Nvidia.

Report: Apple's rumoured foldable iPad gets delayed

A foldable iPad or Mac was being rumoured to be coming. But we might have to wait a bit more for that, at least according to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu. He claims the larger foldable Apple device will take a while to reach the market, saying Apple delayed its release internally. However, Pu didn't specify how long the delay will be.

Google launches Gemini app for iPad

Google brought its Gemini app to the iPad and is now available on the Apple App Store in countries where Gemini is available. The app supports the iPad's Split View so you can run a different app alongside it. Google launched a native Gemini app for the iPhone in November 2024.

Apple is supposedly working on a foldable device, likely a giant iPad that unfolds into a tablet twice its size (around 20 inches). This ambitious project, currently in development, is expected to launch around 2028, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter.
