Google to reportedly release Android 4.4.3 to Nexus devices on May 23

While the rumour mill is abuzz with news that the Nexus line is on its way out, the current line of Nexus devices are tipped to be getting the new Android 4.4.3 update next week. Cult of Android reports the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 will be getting the update on May 23, Friday. It will include a number of bug fixes and help refine the platform further. It isn’t confirmed if all four Nexus devices will be getting the software update on the same day or when the Google Play Edition devices will be getting the update. It is still a rumour at the moment. We will most likely here more about the update and other Android news at the upcoming Google I/O conference.

Samsung adds extra smarts and tougher case for tablets used in schools

Tablets meant for use at school require a bit more protection from kids’ usual antics. That is why Samsung made a classroom ready version of its Galaxy Tab 4 Education. The 10.1-inch tablet has made its debut in the US and it comes with a rugged case to help survive the falls that might happen. The tablet also has access to educational apps, videos, and books through Google Play for Education. The device comes at a premium price though at US$370. Are Nexus devices on the way out at Google in favour of Android Silver?

Is the end coming to Google's Nexus line of devices? Originally designed for developers and early adopters and created by hardware partners like HTC, Samsung and LG, Nexus smartphones carried the very latest versions of the Android while pushing new features and functionalities.

Then came Nexus tablets in 7-inch and 10-inch form factors as a means to push the "Pure Google" experience. Leaker @Evleaks as well as other sources are saying that Nexus devices might be coming to an end. In their place are what are called Android Silver devices. Android Silver is a continuation of the Google Play Editions of devices we've already seen, which are flagship smartphones that run a stock version of Android (sans the usual overlays, crapware and space-clogging widgets). The big difference is that Nexus devices were considered low-cost (yet powerful) devices while Silver migh be focused on premium, or more expensive hardware. It really remains to be seen, we should have a better understanding of where this is all going next month, right around Google I/O.
