Apple expanded its hardware ecosystem with the announcement of two new monitors: the updated Studio Display and the all-new Studio Display XDR. Designed to replace the aging Pro Display XDR, the new 27-inch XDR model features a 5K Retina display powered by mini-LED technology with over 2,000 local dimming zones. It boasts 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync, offering what Apple calls the "ultimate front-of-screen performance" for high-end video editing and 3D rendering workflows.
Both displays come equipped with a 12MP Center Stage camera featuring "Desk View," a studio-quality three-microphone array, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio. Connectivity receives a significant boost with the inclusion of Thunderbolt 5, enabling high-speed daisy-chaining and delivering up to 140W of power to charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro. While both models share a sleek design, the XDR version includes a sophisticated counterbalancing tilt- and height-adjustable stand as standard to assist with ergonomic pro setups.
Despite the high-end specs, prospective buyers should check their hardware compatibility. A commenter on 9to5Mac noted that the 120Hz ProMotion feature is limited to M2 Pro/Max/Ultra chips and newer, while older Apple Silicon Macs (like the base M1 or M3) will be capped at 60Hz. Pre-orders for the new lineup begin tomorrow, March 4, with units hitting shelves on March 11. The standard Studio Display starts at $2,099 in Canada, while the flagship Studio Display XDR enters the market at $4,499.
